#RespectYourElders: Betsey Johnson (born 1942) is one of America’s most celebrated designers, and has delighted fashionistas of many generations since the 1960s.
Johnson got her start after winning a guest editor contest for fashion magazine Mademoiselle. Soon after, Johnson became the in-house designer for the trendy Paraphernalia boutique and went on to open her own store just a few years later.
Johnson experienced many ups and downs in her lengthy career, including being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000. Aftering undergoing radiation, Johnson returned to fashion and continues to inspire her fans by performing a cartwheel at the end of every one of her shows.
Throughout her career, Johnson has remained true to her own style and has carved out a clear niche in the fashion industry. Johnson is known for her quirky designs, including everything from fruit-patterned handbags to chandelier earrings.
Johnson describes her style best. In an interview with Us Magazine, Johnson said “ Always have fun with fashion. Dress to your entertain yourself.” That statement truly describes both her fashion empire and her larger than life personality.
