Caring for LGBT+ Older Adults:
A Media Interview with WGN Radio

WGN Radio recently invited CMSS to speak on the air about the work we do to support LGBT+ older adults. Host Lisa Dent welcomed Katie Fasullo, Corporate Director of Population Health and Health Equity to discuss how CMSS is addressing the needs of LGBT+ older adults across our continuum of care.

During the interview Katie drew attention to the aging population in the U.S., saying by 2030 there will be more than 7 million LGBT+ individuals over the age of 50. She explained that aging service providers need to understand the ways that LGBT+ people have historically been marginalized in care settings and the social support that may be needed, in addition to care.

Katie and Lisa also spoke about the various ways that CMSS is working to support LGBT+ seniors. We create spaces for LGBT+ older adults to be in community and share their stories, we ensure that staff are educated on the history of the LGBT+ fight for equality and the unique challenges that many LGBT+ individuals face as they age, and we implement policies and procedures that make our communities more welcoming for LGBT+ residents, visitors, and staff.
