Partner Highlight: The Illinois Assistive Technology Program (IATP)

The Illinois Assistive Technology Program (IATP) is a non-partisan 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Since 1989, they have provided Illinoisans of all ages with access to assistive technology (AT) devices and services, enhancing independence and quality of life for people with disabilities and health conditions. IATP offers a large inventory of assistive technology devices and provides education and training activities, technical assistance, professional AT evaluations, and more.

IATP believes that disability and aging are a natural part of human experience and do not diminish a person’s right to enjoy full inclusion and integration in society. This includes the right to benefit from education, pursue meaningful careers, enjoy self-determination, make informed choices, and live in an environment of their choosing. Assistive technologies can help make all this possible for people who are aging, have disabilities, or other health conditions.

IATP provides free information and guidance related to assistive technology. To find out more about the types of assistive technology devices and services available, to donate or obtain devices, to receive training for using a device, to learn about the costs and funding options for obtaining AT, and to try AT devices before making a purchase decision – you can contact IATP online at www.iltech.org or by phone at (800) 852-5110.

CMSS Board Member Paula Basta works with the IATP as the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Program Development. Of their services, she says, “It is so important for people to have the tools necessary to age well and continue participating in their lives. I am proud to work for an organization that teaches people about the devices and services available to them and connects people with those tools to make them successful. This work is very rewarding.”

Terri Worman, IATP Training and Outreach Specialist, joined the West Suburban Senior Center and LGBT+ Program community this summer to provide presentations on the types of devices and services IATP offers. “It’s fun to share all the options with folks. Sometimes people may not even realize that they could have an easier time with everyday tasks, but then, when they see these technologies, they see the opportunity for a little more ease in life. Whether it is book holders, cardholders, or modified grips, smart appliances, accessible cabinets, or adapted utensils, there are so many ways that simple changes can make a big difference.”
