Assisted living for seniors on Chicago's northside

Located in Andersonville, on Chicago’s northside, Hartwell Place is a welcoming, intimate assisted living community specializing in memory care for older adults. With 28 private rooms, Hartwell Place is intentionally small, because we know that familiarity and connections are the keys to a good life with dementia. Here, no one is a stranger – we see ourselves as family.

At CMSS, memory care isn’t just something we offer – it’s something we’ve pioneered. One of the first organizations in the Chicago area to specialize in dementia care, we’ve been supporting individuals living with memory loss for over a century.

We opened Hartwell Place 25 years ago – over the decades, we’ve learned that exceptional memory care is about more than a safe and supportive environment. It’s about creating a place where residents feel truly seen, valued, and loved – where they can thrive, not just get by. A place to call home. With a high caregiver-to-resident ratio, Hartwell Place creates a vibrant, joyful, and engaged lifestyle that helps residents feel at home and stimulates their mind, body, and spirit.

Welcome to our home!

One of our leaders, formerly the Director of Education for the national office of the Alzheimer’s Association, helped developed CARES®, a dementia care training program now used nationwide.

At Hartwell Place, CARES® is just the beginning. Every team member receives comprehensive dementia care training, supported by ongoing, hands-on guidance from our experienced leadership team. Training isn’t confined to a classroom – it happens every day, in real time, as leaders model best practices and mentor staff.

Our leadership is deeply involved. You’ll often find our director not just behind a desk, but walking alongside residents—helping with daily needs, offering comfort, serving meals, and ensuring every person feels included and cared for.

Because exceptional care takes more than good intentions—it requires expertise and daily dedication. At Hartwell Place, our team brings both.

MORE INFORMATION

“Assisted living” is a broad term referring to communities that provide care to older adults who can no longer live independently. You may hear these facilities referred to as assisted care or assisted senior living facilities. Hartwell Place residents receive care and support in activities of daily living as needed, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting assistance, and medication management. In assisted living facilities (sometimes abbreviated “AL”), staff are available around the clock. “Assisted living memory care” is a specific type of assisted living that focuses on the needs of older adults living with dementia. In an assisted living memory care facility like Hartwell Place, all residents have a diagnosis of dementia. Older adults have more independence than in a skilled nursing facility but still receive more supervision than they might in a typical assisted living community.

Hartwell Place is not considered a nursing home. The term “nursing home” refers to a facility that provides residents with full-time monitoring and medical assistance. This is also considered skilled nursing or skilled care and is usually the highest level of care for elderly individuals who do not require hospitalization. Hartwell Place, on the other hand, is staffed 24/7 with trained care staff and provides 24-hour nursing services.

When it comes to elderly living and senior care, many types of facilities are available to you and your family. You may find references to memory care facilities, senior homes, senior living communities, care centers, short-term rehabilitation, respite care, and elder care. The team at CMSS is happy to help you navigate the differences between types of facilities and your needs. Contact us today with your questions.

Hartwell Place is in the heart of Andersonville, in Chicago, but welcomes residents from all over the city, state, and country. Many residents come to us from surrounding neighborhoods like Edgewater, Uptown, Rogers Park, Lincoln Park, Lincoln Square, Lakeview, Gold Coast, Albany Park, and Avondale and from nearby suburbs including Evanston, Skokie, Niles, Schaumburg, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Wilmette, and Winnetka. We also have residents from northwest Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

No. Hartwell Place is a program of Chicago Methodist Senior Services, a non-sectarian, non-profit organization. CMSS was founded in 1898 by a Methodist woman and her church. While the word Methodist still appears in our name, we are not a Methodist institution or otherwise religiously affiliated. We welcome residents, team members, and volunteers of all beliefs. We also work to support each resident’s personal religious beliefs and preferences.

Determining what level of care, you or your loved one needs can be confusing. The Hartwell Place team is happy to meet with you and your family to discuss options. As a memory care facility, we focus on serving individuals living with dementia, including Alzheimer’s and other types of memory loss. At Hartwell Place we offer assisted living memory care, as well as a supportive daytime memory program – the Hartwell Place Day Club. We also offer assistance at home through SASI Home Care.
