Cultural Competence: The Key to Person First Language

September 27, 2017      5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

When dealing with individuals who are different from yourself, we can sometimes use incorrect or “almost right” words to identify who they are. To create an inclusive environment for both patients and staff, it’s important to know what are the right ways to identify patients. In this workshop, social workers will increase their knowledge of “Person First Language” and acquire an open mind to and tolerance of difference, including those from the LGBT community. As a result, participants will gain tools to create respect and inclusion among their patients and colleagues.
Participants will:
• Define person first inclusive language and its connection to patient-centered care.
• Examine ways to move beyond their unconscious bias and use inclusive language with staff and patients.
• Identify ways to help others use bias-free language and thereby increase tolerance of difference in the healthcare setting.
