What is Home Care? Can it Help Me?
You've heard that home care service may be able to help, but is
it right for you and your family? Let's start by explaining exactly
what home care means.
Home care service is designed to serve two
purposes: (1) to empower your family
member to live as independently as possible within his or her own
home, and (2) to alleviate you and your family of
the stress and hardship that can come with the evolving
responsibilities of caring for your family member.
The benefits of home care can be numerous to both you and your
family. Your aging relative may need assistance with tasks and
activities that he or she can no longer do alone. Being able to
rely on someone to assist with things like medication reminders,
bathing, meal preparation, and grocery shopping can remove a great
amount of stress, allowing your loved ones more time and energy for
pursuing enjoyable activities. Likewise, between caring for
children, working full-time, and acting as the family caregiver,
you can easily find yourself stretched far too thin -- frustrated
and stressed and not able to commit the energy you want to any of
your roles. Finding relief, even if it's temporary respite, can
make life happier for you and those that rely on you for care on a
daily basis.
"Respite is crucial to caregivers who often become exhausted and
isolated," said Assistant Secretary for Aging Kathy Greenlee in a
recent publication by the U.S. Administration of Aging. "Providing
respite ensures that families caring for loved ones with a
disability receive the emotional support and services necessary to
reduce stess and avoid burnout."
The bottom line is this: none of us should be forced to deal
with more than we can handle. If you think your family may benefit
from a part-time or full-time senior caregiver, reach out to an
MHSC representative to have a discussion about how senior home care
might work for you. You can contact us at (773)
